Ninite Fails to Update Chrome: Could Not Verify Installation

One user’s Windows 10 computer keeps returning this error when Ninite Pro tries to update Chrome (whether interactively or from the command line):

Chrome : Install failed – Could not verify installation (1) – 3623

When I opened Chrome, it said “Error” in the upper right corner. Clicking on that took me to a warning that an external application, Adobe Acrobat, had tried to modify how Chrome works. I clicked a button telling Chrome that was okay.

I tried the Ninite update again and it still failed with the same error.

I rebooted the computer and tried again. Same error.

Okay I guess I’ll update Chrome manually, see if that works. Wait, what’s this? Ninite wants to update Chrome to 99.0.4844.51:

Ninite Chrome 1

but Chrome says it is already up to date with 98.0.4758.102:

Ninite Chrome 2

Well it looks like Chrome 99 is on a phased rollout—see this Reddit thread.. Not sure why Ninite can’t force the update if it has the installer, but I’ll give it a day or two and see how it goes.

Update March 5, 2022

I was still getting the update failure from Ninite. Today, however, I was able to update Chrome manually to 99.0.4844.51. We’ll see if Ninite can do the next update
