Update Essentials Connector before Upgrading Windows 10

Mark Berry November 11, 2016

Almost a year ago, I wrote about how the Windows 10 Update Breaks 2012 R2 Essentials Connector.

I thought that was fixed if you install KB3172614 on your server as MS blogged here.

That’s not enough.

Can’t Remove Essentials Computer

Mark Berry October 24, 2016

I was having trouble removing a computer from the Essentials 2012 R2 dashboard. Can’t recall the error but I do recall the entire dashboard crashing.

I found this thread on the dashboard crashing.

Which led to this TechNet article on uninstalling update KB3102467 to get rid of .NET 4.6.1. The article was written due to an incompatibility with Microsoft Exchange but includes general info on removing .NET 4.6.1. As of October 2016, this article says blocking .NET 4.6.1 is no longer needed. Not sure if that applies to the dashboard crashing issue or not.

Which led to KB3133990 about how to block future installation of .NET 4.6.1.

With .NET 4.6.1 removed and blocked, I was able to remove the computer.

If you have a Windows 10 machine connected to an Essentials 2012 R2 server and you apply the Windows 10 November update (1511), all Essentials connections will be lost.

Essentials 2012 R2 Anywhere Access VPN Failure

I’ve set up Anywhere Access on my Essentials 2012 R2 server including the VPN option. However, when I try to connect, the connection fails and I get error 20253 on the server:

Can’t Email Essentials Health Report Since Daylight Savings Time

Mark Berry November 3, 2014

In the U.S., daylight savings time started on November 2 at 2:00am. Which means that at 2:00am, it was suddenly 1:00am. At that moment, Essentials lost its ability to send email.

Can’t Connect to Essentials 2012 R2 with RWA

Mark Berry September 1, 2014

I usually use straight RDP to connect to my Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials machine, but I wanted to try Remote Web Access. I had no problem logging in to the RWA web page, but when I clicked on the sever and tried to open the RDP session through the gateway, it failed with no message.
